Stories from Our Generations Family

Breathing easier at being 84-pounds lighter…and counting

March 1, 2016

story-anthonyDiagnosis: Ventilator Dependent and Bariatric Patient

Anthony J. is a 45-year-old man from Huntsville, Alabama. Anthony spent six months on a ventilator and some time on dialysis while at a hospital in Alabama. Upon admission to Generations at Rock Island, he was vent-dependent and weighed 410lbs.

Personalized Treatment and Therapy Plan

At Generations at Rock Island, Anthony receives a full spectrum of services. A low calorie diet is only a small part of his multi-disciplinary plan. Anthony is offered counseling on nutrition, diet and weight management issues. Additionally, he receives scheduled physical therapy at the facility and in his spare time he uses exercise equipment provided to him in his room. Anthony also participates in restorative therapy programs for walking, and he partakes in activities such as Wii bowling and baseball as part of his therapy plan.

Results:

Anthony has lost 84lbs. in four months. He is off the ventilator and now weighs 326lbs. Anthony has a goal weight of 270lbs. He enjoys participating in facility activities and boasts that while he could only walk a few steps when he first came to Generations at Rock Island, he can now make it twice around the hall with his walker.

Feedback:

The staff working at Generations at Rock Island is excellent, and the people here are very friendly. It is my first time up north, and I got to see snow. I used to work at a restaurant, and weighed 180lbs. in high school. My goal is to increase my mobility and get home to Huntsville, Alabama. I know with everyone’s help I will reach my goal.
